The VoiceMaster Inspires on Sonshine Radio: A Voice That Moves and Empowers
“Our voice is a gift from God. How we use it is our gift back to Him.”
This was one of the many golden insights shared by Pocholo "The VoiceMaster" Gonzales during his inspiring live guesting on DZAR 1026 Sonshine Radio's program Pa-Talk Show.
On that memorable Thursday afternoon, listeners and viewers were treated to a rare, live, in-person interview with the country's premier voice artist, motivational speaker, and youth advocate. And true to his title, The VoiceMaster didn’t just speak—he inspired.
Humble Beginnings and the Power of Radio
Growing up without a television, young Pocholo found comfort and wonder in radio dramas. Mimicking voices from shows like Gabi ng Lagim, he unknowingly laid the foundation for his future in voice acting.
At 16, while still a freshman at UP Diliman, he launched his professional career, winning voice acting competitions and stepping into the worlds of radio drama, dubbing, and voice-over work.
His story reminds us that limitations can become launching pads when fueled by passion and perseverance.
The Secret Behind a Powerful Voice
When asked whether voice talent is innate or developed, Pocholo was quick to assure:
"Our voice is not just a gift; it’s also a choice. With training and awareness, anyone can find and enhance their voice."
Like a tall basketball player needing training to play professionally, a person’s voice—no matter the quality—can be honed through practice, discipline, and heart.
For Pocholo, voice acting is not about mimicking sounds alone; it's about becoming the character, about breathing life into words.
From Artist to Advocate
Throughout his career, Pocholo faced rejection from industry veterans, yet he chose not to harbor resentment. Instead, he built his own path—founding Creative Voices Productions and the Philippine Center for Voice Acting to help aspiring voice artists find opportunities and mentorship.
At just 23 years old, he launched his own company, choosing to lift others instead of competing with them. Today, many of the Philippines’ top voice talents and dubbing directors trace their beginnings to his programs.
"The truly great don’t forget where they came from," Pocholo said, emphasizing the importance of humility and gratitude in one’s success.
Resilience, Gratitude, and Giving Back
A pivotal moment came when Pocholo lost his voice for eight months due to a cyst in his vocal cords. Facing the unthinkable for someone whose life revolves around speaking, he turned to prayer and reflection.
His experience deepened his commitment:
"If God returns my voice, I will use it even more to inspire others."
True to his word, he intensified his advocacy—training even more aspiring voice artists, especially persons with disabilities (PWDs), proving that no barrier is too great for a determined voice.
He proudly shared the story of Monette Mahinay, the Philippines' first blind dubber, whom he mentored. Though visually impaired, Monette now paints memories with her voice, a living testament to the VoiceMaster’s belief in possibilities beyond limits.
The Certified Voice Artist Program (CVAP)
When the pandemic hit, Pocholo saw it not as a hindrance but as an opportunity. He transitioned his training programs online through the Certified Voice Artist Program (CVAP), exponentially growing his impact.
In just two years, CVAP produced over 1,000 new certified voice artists—many of whom are now actively shaping the Philippine voice acting industry.
Parting Words of Wisdom
To aspiring voice artists and dreamers everywhere, Pocholo left powerful advice:
- Don't chase money. Chase mastery. Money will follow.
- Use your voice for good. Not just to earn, but to inspire and uplift.
- Be grateful. Always remember the roots of your success.
He ended with a heartfelt reminder:
"Live as if you’ve already died—meaning live fully, with kindness, purpose, and gratitude every day."
