A University Built Before a Nation Was Born

The construction of UST reminds us that every great institution begins with a dream.

There are places that do more than stand through time. They speak.

The University of Santo Tomas is one of those places.

In this video, we are brought back to Manila in 1611, a time when the foundations of one of Asia’s oldest universities were being built. But this is not just a story about walls, wood, stone, and construction. This is a story about vision. It is about people who believed that education could shape generations long before the modern world even imagined what the Philippines would become.

Imagine Manila in the early 1600s.

No skyscrapers. No traffic. No internet. No artificial intelligence. No modern classrooms. Yet in the middle of that world, people were already building a place for learning.

The University of Santo Tomas began as an institution dedicated to education, faith, philosophy, theology, grammar, and the humanities. What started as a school became a symbol of intellectual formation and cultural identity.

That alone is powerful.

Because before we became who we are today, there were already institutions preparing minds, shaping leaders, and preserving knowledge.
