Finding Your Voice: The Art and Passion Behind Voice Acting

CVAP Staff: Ralph Ernest Francia, Bryan Dave Perez, Mac Florendo, Janeane Santos-Roco, and Jayjay Delos Santos

Ever wondered what it takes to become a voice artist? Whether it’s dubbing anime, narrating commercials, or bringing characters to life in animated films, voice acting is an art form that requires more than just a good voice. On PTV’s Rise and Shine Pilipinas, the spotlight was on the Certified Voice Artist Program (CVAP)—a training ground for aspiring voice artists in the Philippines.

The show welcomed Bryan Dave Perez, OIC of CreatiVoices Philippines, alongside talented voice actors Mac Florendo, Janeane Santos-Roco, Ralph Ernest Francia, and Jayjay Delos Santos. They shared their insights, experiences, and even gave some incredible voice-acting samples that left everyone in awe.

The Birth of CVAP

Voice acting has been around for years, but it wasn’t until the pandemic that the Certified Voice Artist Program truly flourished. Founded on June 20, 2020, by Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” De Leon Gonzales, CVAP was born out of the need to create more opportunities for aspiring voice actors.

Before CVAP, Pocholo had already established VoiceWorx, the country’s first-ever voice acting school. With over 50 batches of graduates, VoiceWorx became the foundation for many professional dubbers in the Philippines. However, CVAP took things further by offering online training, making it accessible to more people regardless of location.

What Does It Take to Be a Voice Artist?

Voice acting isn’t just about having a deep, smooth, or unique voice. According to the CVAP team, there’s a lot of training and skill development involved. Some of the key lessons in their program include:

🎤 Voice Modulation & Acting – Learning how to change and control your voice to fit different roles.
🎤 Technical Training – Understanding the right equipment, recording techniques, and sound editing.
🎤 Voice Care – Keeping your voice healthy for longevity in the industry.
🎤 Confidence Building – Engaging in activities like vlogging and scriptwriting to enhance performance.
🎤 Client Relations – Knowing how to market yourself and land voiceover gigs.

More Than Just a Side Hustle

One of the biggest questions people ask is, “Can you make a living from voice acting?” The short answer: Yes, but it takes time.

The team emphasized that while voice acting can be lucrative, beginners shouldn’t expect to make big money right away. Instead, they should focus on honing their craft, building a portfolio, and taking on pro-bono projects to gain experience.

💰 Earning Potential:

  • Commercial voiceovers pay the highest.

  • Corporate voice recordings (like automated voice systems) offer steady gigs.

  • Animation and dubbing can be rewarding but competitive.

For many, voice acting starts as a passion project or side hustle before turning into a full-time career.

The Power of Voice for Advocacy

Beyond entertainment, voice acting can also be a platform for advocacy. Mac Florendo, for example, uses his voice to promote food sustainability, while others in the program amplify the voices of persons with disabilities (PWDs) and social causes.

Jayjay. Delos Santos, known as the “guy with 36 voices,” showcased his talent by mimicking characters like Mickey Mouse and Master Hans. The segment wasn’t just fun—it proved how powerful and versatile the human voice can be.
