The VoiceMaster Speaks About Effective Communication at the IMAP 12th Midyear Conference

The Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP) 12th MidYear Conference, a 3-day online conference, was conducted from April 29 to May 1, 2021, in celebration of the International Day of Midwife. Pocholo "The VoiceMaster" Gonzales was invited on the first day of the event to talk and inspire the audience together with two other speakers, Ms. Mary Jude Icasiano, BSFT, MSc, and Ms. Fatima Ignacio Gimenez, MD. The IDM 2021 is a celebration of the significance of midwifery and an occasion to make awareness about the status of midwives on the essential care they provide to mothers and babies.

In his talk “Ang Laban Para sa Epektibong Usapan”, Pocholo discussed how to be an effective communicator, especially as a healthcare professional. At first, he emphasized the work of midwives in the Philippines as he reminisces how he himself was delivered by his grandmother, who is a midwife. He also shared his talent with the audience by performing a short story of a father and his son visiting and thanking his mother, who helped deliver his son as a baby.

The conference continued with Pocholo’s talk about how one’s voice is important and powerful enough to create change and connect with other people. He inspired the audience by talking about how great people CAN (Communicate, Aspire, and Nurture). According to him, effective communication is the most important life skill. Pocholo also shared four communication skills: Nonverbal, Thinking, Speaking, Listening. He focused on verbal communication skills as he explained that based on a 2018 survey by the National Association of College and Employers (NACE), it is ranked first among job candidates’ must-have skills and qualities.

Pocholo believes that the importance of good communication skills is anchored on how connection is built and how it internally develops a speaker’s confidence in conversing and presenting himself. He explained that it is also the most important skill and criteria to create and maintain relationships with others, be it inside or outside work. This then became his transition to his discussion of the 8 Laban ways to improve one’s communication skills instantly to help him be confident in conversing with other people naturally. 

The VoiceMaster then ended the virtual conference with two inspiring and impactful quotes, “Our voice is the greatest gift from God. How we use it is our greatest gift back to God,” and “Availability is the best Ability” where he accentuates the importance of the audiences’ presence in the success of the event.
